Heading up the expertise behind the range of prepared meals, coffee shop menu and catering food selections is Chef Phillip Traut. Born and bred in Cape Town, the centre of food culture is South Africa, Phillip started his career in food as early as thirteen years of age. Under the guidance of celebrated Chef Rodrick Mckenzie, Phillip mastered food preparation and soon was creating Baked Alaska's and more. Then his career took off and Phillip found himself preparing food for Royalty and celebrities alike.
Now Phillip heads up the delicatessen at the new Gateway Superspar store, "We have the most state of the art delicatessen I have ever seen," Chef Phillip said, "We have equipment I don't even know how to use yet," he joked good-naturedly. Phillip's new 'Create Menu' allows you to have your input and is fantastic; it must be experienced to be believed.
Phillip is joined by Asad Abas Shah, Asad is from Pakistan and his eyes lit up as soon as I asked him what his speciality dishes were. "By far my Lamb Rogen Josh," he said enthusiastically, "but I also specialise in Chinese style cooking with chicken, beef or vegetable Chow Mein." From the look on Asad's face I could see he was passionately involved in his career. "We make fantastic parata, Basmati Biryani, roti, naan, and Kheer, sweat rice, everybody loves sweat rice."
Keeping the team together and on an even keel is Debbie Sibaya, a more levelheaded manager you would be hard put to find. She keeps all the departments in the deli and coffee shop together, the smoothies and milkshakes, the crispy thin based hot pizza's and the waffles. "Our flame grilled chicken is a favourite with our customers." Debbie told me with a confidence that was confirmed by the queue of people eager to be served. "We keep the costs as low as possible and offer excellent value for money. Our ability to cater for large or small numbers at good prices is unbeatable, especially when you see the quality and freshness of our food."
I'm sold and I know where I am going to be getting my take-a-ways from. Frozen yoghurt with so many choices of toppings, ice cream cones, it is all there for the taking.
