Hugo Chavez displayed real character, he was a man who was not afraid to be outrageous and outspoken. I loved how he stood up to the mega powers and literally showed them all a big finger. He never minced his words, he was radical and sometimes unreasonable but it was real.
Some of the things that came out of his mouth were hilarious. This one time, a couple of years ago, he peed off the king of Spain, Juan Carlos who publically told him to "shut up". It was hysterical because Chavez didn't even respond.
He was once quoted as saying, "If someday they get the crazy idea of coming to invade us, we'll make them bite the dust, defending the freedom of our land" I loved his tenacity. I am sure that there are those who dont share my sentiments but what the hell.
How can you not love someone who is so straightforward?
One time in 2008 he was being condescending to Sarah Palin, he said, "The poor thing, you have to feel sorry for her Palin is a beauty queen that they've put in the role of a figurine."
He was a big believer of conspiracy theories, which I love and which have always fascinated me, giving credence to 9/11 conspiracies in 2006, he said, "The hypothesis is not absurd that those towers could have been dynamited. A building never collapses like that, unless it's with an implosion. The hypothesis that is gaining strength is that it was the same U.S. imperial power that planned and carried out this terrible terrorist attack or act against its own people and against citizens of all over the world."
Hated by the entrenched classes, Hugo Chavez will live forever in history, for his brave stand against those elements that are so obviously wrong with the world today.
Look, anyone who called Bush a devil, gets a thumbs-up from me. Chavez was no saint but he wasn't a devil either - even though media manipulation led us to believe he was. I believe he really had the best interests of his people at heart and did as much as he could for them, considering the opposition he faced.
In Chavez's case it is difficult to separate truth from fiction, as it is with all charismatic leaders who oppose American imperialism. Gaddafi is good example of this point.
Wouldn't it be nice if we had a leader that had even half as much compassion for our people that Chavez had for his.
On the topic of leaders, our own president Zuma sent his condolences to the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. In his message he said; "Our hearts are with the family of President Chavez, as well as the Government and the people of Venezuela during this difficult time of mourning the departure of this respected revolutionary leader of Venezuela and indeed the entire progressive family of nations".
Hugo Chavez had his faults - he was human. But he was a good man. I hope someday we WILL have our own Chavez in this country who will stand up to the west and take care of the poor.
So long Commandante may you rest in the peace you so richly deserve.
