Kzn Sharks Board With Different Stakeholders Celebrated International Coastal Clean-Up Campaign 2023

Kzn Sharks Board With Different Stakeholders Celebrated International Coastal Clean-Up Campaign 2023

Date: 2023-10-03

Background

International Coastal Clean-up Day is apromise to bring cleanliness and purity to nature as a whole. The day wasstarted to raise awareness about the growing pollution on various beaches ofthe world. Population growth and is one of the main factors that have led toseverely high levels of pollution in the environment, particularly in theoceans that make up over 70% of our planet, hence the KZN Sharks Board decidedto raise awareness during this day.

The KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board has onceagain join hands with the Department of Economic, Development Tourism andEnvironmental Affairs, Aquelle, eThekwini Municipality, South Durban CommunityEnvironment Alliance, Association of Clean Communities John Dorys Zero WasteInitiative and AmaZulu Football Club as we were challenging all the societiesto roll up their sleeves and to did their bit to keep our coast clean thisInternational Coastal Clean-Up Day on Friday, 15 September 2023 at TreasureBeach at Bluff (Durban).

Water has a cyclical nature, which meansthat anything we are putting into our oceans and other water bodies will comeback to us sooner or later. For every mile of ocean, there are pieces ofplastic debris floating. Furthermore, as plastic does not decompose over a longperiod, and only disintegrates, minute plastic particles are already showing upin our food and water. If these trends continue, it won't be long before weface disastrous outcomes for our environment, that why we took the initiativein participation of this year's international coastal clean-up.

The Board strongly believes that theinitiative of keeping our local beaches clean helps protect marine habitats andwildlife, while fostering a deeper appreciation for these beautiful naturalspaces we all share.

This has been evidenced by the publicparticipation during this initiative as they welcomed and appreciated theeffort by the KZNSB to clean the beach. Of course, this was not our first beachclean-up. It follows several similar initiatives, and will not just end here,we strongly look forward to being working alongside our partners in keeping ourenvironment clean. The Sharks Board implemented this initiative with theassignment of protecting the marine ecosystem by removing debris that poses adanger to aquatic animals and plants. Sharks Board, being the only organisationof its kind in the world and the only South African organisation using sharks'safety gear to protect beach users as they enjoy the warmth of our 37 safebathing beaches, has noticed the fact that, If you head to the beach almostanywhere in the entire KZN, you'll likely see evidence of human impact, likebottles, cigarette butts, plastic pieces and many more.

We could not leave the public withoutsharing valuable information which pertains to our existence, and this was doneduring the formal proceedings where all our partners present took on stage andshare the importance of this day.

Surely, no one is willing to take theirloved ones for a day out at the beach even though it wasn't clean, most likelynot because you will be afraid of the dangers a dirty environment would bring. Now let's keep our self-serving motives aside and focus on those creatures whowould have no choice but to continue living amongst trash. We all have the roleto think about them and work to make our beaches clean, safe, and beautifulagain.
