Discover Durban's Wild Side on Two Wheels with EMBA's Scenic Trail Network

Discover Durban's Wild Side on Two Wheels with EMBA's Scenic Trail Network

Date: 2026-01-29

Durban's outdoor lovers and mountain biking enthusiasts are invited to explore some of the region's most spectacular riding terrain through the eThekwini Mountain Bike Association (EMBA), a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to providing safe, legal and well-managed access to privately owned land for recreational walking, running and cycling.

Formed nearly two decades ago, EMBA is an affiliate of local cycling clubs that entered into a landmark agreement with Tongaat Hulett Sugar, allowing riders to legally access acres of farm land stretching from Cornubia to Tongaat on the North Coast, as well as the scenic Shongweni area West of Durban.

The EMBA trail network offers approximately 180km of riding across two distinct regions, with more than 20km of purpose-built singletrack in each area, complemented by jeep tracks and dirt roads. In Shongweni, riders are treated to big views, rolling valleys, grasslands and indigenous bush, with routes ranging from relaxed gravel spins to technical singletrack.

North of the city, the North Coast chapter celebrates coastal riding at its best. Starting points include Cycle Lab Cornubia and Salta Sibaya, with multiple trail entry points leading riders through rolling sugarcane fields, flowing singletrack and sections with ocean views. The trails cater for everyone, from families and beginners to seasoned riders looking for fast, challenging terrain.

Membership for 2026 offers strong value, including two R125 Cycle Lab vouchers, 20% off Cadence Nutrition online orders throughout the year, and a once-off mountain biking skills day. Annual fees are R990 for adults, R750 for pensioners over 70, and just R150 for children under 18 and students, significantly reduced from last year to encourage youth participation.

EMBA operates entirely on a voluntary basis, with all membership fees going directly towards trail maintenance, land access agreements and rider safety. For 2026, EMBA has budgeted R500 000 for maintenance across both areas, ensuring trails remain safe, rideable and environmentally responsible.

Nature lovers, fitness enthusiasts and adventure seekers are encouraged to join an affiliated cycling club and become part of the EMBA community. A day pass option is available at R50 per person. Membership applications and further information are available at https://www.emba.org.za.
