Tea ceremony: profound Mindfulness experience

Tea ceremony: profound Mindfulness experience

Author: Christo Barnard
Date: 2023-04-27
In the last month I was fortunate enough to attend two tea ceremonies in Bali.

Being a coffee lover, I am grateful that I accepted the the invitation of a friend to attend the tea ceremony as it expanded me and deepened my experience of mindfulness.

Yes, I know, most of you must be curious of how the simple act of drinking tea can deepen your awareness but believe me the experience is profound.

First of all, sitting quietly with people in stillness and watching the host preparing for the tea ceremony creates a special space to breathe. The dried tea leaves are passed around and each and everyone is granted the opportunity to inhale the aroma, followed by a brief explanation of the origin enhances the feeling of oneness.

It is as if you become part of the tea and the tea part of you. Everybody waits for the tea to be poured, then inhales the aroma and takes small sips in awareness, feeling the warm liquid in your mouth make its way all the way down to your belly enhances the feeling of oneness.

On each exhale you are prompted to soften, to feel the gratitude and to smile. Tasting five different teas took an hour and a half and was all done in stillness.

The space felt sacred, the experience almost holy. Psalm 46:10 "Be still and know that I am God" came to mind.
