Featuring Quiksilver Team Rider - Shane Sykes

Date: 2017-02-10
Shane Sykes hardly needs introduction on the North Coast of KZN, his family name is almost synonymous with surfing.

Shane lives in Salt Rock and can regularly be seen paddling out into the sunrise on Salt Rock beach in almost any conditions. Lately Shane is on the East Coast of a somewhat smaller continent competing in the World Surfing League - Qualifying Series.

"At the moment I'm in Australia doing a bunch of 1000 rated QS events and in the trials for a 6000 rated event in Merewether." Shane told The Bugle, "After that I'll be heading home for a few weeks to get ready for a few QS events in South Africa that I'm really keen for as there haven't been too many comps in South Africa in past few years."

Shane will be back in SA to compete in other WSL QS Events at Nahoon Reef, The Buffalo City Surf Pro in April, followed by an event at New Pier in Durban, the Durban Surf Pro.

"It's going to be nice to compete on home ground again. In the future I hope to go on some really good freesurf trips that will help my profile and get some good results under my belt to qualify for bigger events such as the Ballito Pro and so on."

We will be rooting for Shane, who said "I'm just taking every day as it comes and having fun while doing it."

Shane's father Darren is involved in developing the Ilembe Surf Riders Association, affiliated to SURFING SOUTH AFRICA. He is growing a development team at Thompsons Bay tidal pool, which will be travelling to Pollock Beach in Port Elizabeth for the SA GROM GAMES, which kicks off the beginning of a surfing career. Voluntary coaches and lifesavers are assisting, Quinton Jones, Justin Sykes and many others from the area like surfers Sophie and Tom Bell, Reagan Sharpe and Dom Southwood.
