Adventures with Kingsley Holgate

Adventures with Kingsley Holgate

Date: 2016-04-15
This is the second of 24 action-packed Land Rover dispatches, the first five in the series recounts a yearlong journey to follow the entire Great African Rift Valley. It's a story best told in the words taken from the scribbles in Kingsley's sweat-stained expedition journals

"We navigate by the seat of our pants, our Cooper Tires down to 1 bar, grinding through choking powder soft dust and then we pump them hard again to bounce over ancient solidified lava flows. It is incredibly tough on our Landies. Get lost out here and that will be the last you'll hear from us.

Three days later we reach the ancient fortified trade terminus of Harar. Considered to be the fourth holy city of Islam after Mecca, Medina and Jerusalem. The first European explorer to enter the 'forbidden city' was Richard Burton in 1855. He survived to write an interesting note on local honey-wine At Harar, Tej or Zatsh, as it's sometimes called, is made of honey dissolved in hot water, strained and fermented for seven days with the bark of the Kudidah tree. Every traveller praises this honey-wine, and some have not scrupled to prefer it to champagne. It exhilarates, excites and acts as an aphrodisiac; the consequence is, that at Harar all men, pagans, sages, priests and rulers drink it We try it, it makes us talk loudly with numerous visits to the loo And then we hear about Abbas the Hyena Man, we'll meet him outside the city wall - we'll keep you posted.

These adventures are brought to you by Land Rover Ballito, 37 Moffat Drive, Ballito. Call them and make a date to take one of the Land Rover models for a test drive on 032 - 946 1391.
