Through my eyes

Through my eyes

Date: 2019-07-26

My recent trip to Johannesburg was one sad expedition. Besides the numbing cold, the grey stressed people and the crime, life here seems to be hanging on a thread, or is it just me having a real experience?

It's so easy to get caught up in our easy beautiful life here on the Dolphin Coast. Our mild weather, our smiling people, the gentle pace of everyday life, we take it all for granted, imagine living a life filled with stress and strife like in Joburg.

When you planning your trip to Joburg you have to remember that you are entering a danger zone, and everyone will keep reminding you to 'be careful', 'watch your things', 'wait indoors' and everyone you speak to has a horror story.

One thing that really touched my heart was driving through Hillbrow on the Sunday afternoon, the Revival church here is having a real revival, as thousands of people spilled out of the church onto the street, I truly mean thousands of worshipers. Each person comes with their own chair and plonks themselves on the sidewalk while massive speakers blare out the word of God.

Nobody minds the traffic, cars cruising by or the chilly bite in the afternoon breeze. They are there to pray. Where there is God, there is hope.

But instead of building more malls and more gated communities, the government should be thinking of building more churches. If there is one thing that can help South Africa it's faith, everything else has failed so far.

As I am heading back to our beautiful province full of hope and promise, I am humbled in the knowledge that, while our country struggles with crime, unemployment, racism and lack of progress, here is KZN, we at least live in one of the most spectacular places on earth.

There always needs to be something that motivates us to come back home, whatever it is, we can look forward to the familiar, the friendly faces, the warm smiles and the general hospitality of our people.

Here's to looking for the good in the pile of badhere's to the weekend...
