F1 Report

Date: 2014-05-09
Round Five of the 2014 F1 World Championship goes to the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya for the Spanish Grand Prix.

Barcelona is probably the toughest circuit on the tyres, so Pirelli has allocated hard and medium compound tyres for this event. This adds to the decision-making process and strategy team managers will have to make on the day.

Tough turns on the Catalunya circuit are Turns Three and Nine, as well as Turns Seven and Eight, which hammer the tyres. The coarse tarmac at Catalunya is known to eat away at the tyres more than other circuits. So if it is a sunny day tyre temperatures will be somewhat higher especially on the left-hand side. Tight right-handers and short straights don't allow time for the tyres to cool, making for interesting tyre strategies.

Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg will be looking for his sixteenth podium this weekend in Barcelona, "The Spanish Grand Prix is the first race of the season on European soil after four exciting races at various circuits overseas. This is where the next phase of the season begins and there is probably no other track in the world that I know as well as the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya" said Rosberg.

Defending Champion Sebastian Vettel offered his view saying, "The Circuit de Catalunya is varied with 180 degree bends, fast, sweeping corners and elevation changes. There isn't much opportunity to overtake, so getting a good start position in qualifying will be crucial. The long, fast curves of Montmelo mean that it will suit a car with highly efficient aerodynamics. The track is very challenging on the tyres because of the same very fast corners, so lots of pit stops are likely in the race."

In any event it will be a fantastic event and not to be missed. Read about the outcome in The Bugle.
