With the economy hitting an all time low and the whispers in the banking corridors warning against major financial meltdown, people are struggling to live up to their lifestyle commitments with many defaulting on their payments sending the business community into turmoil.
There really is no excuse for defaulting and not paying people what you owe them. The time has come when we all have to look at our financial situations and start scaling down. Selling off those toys that were so cool a couple of summers ago and now simply don't have a place in our garden sheds. Trading in our smart, diesel guzzling SUVs for cheaper eco friendly models.
Its time we all realised that we just cannot continue to be consuming at this rate. We all have to take into account that without conscious planning, we will not reach financial stability.
I know I am suppose to be inspirational and uplifting but the last couple of months I have been truly scared about the future of our country and the rest of the world for that matter. Unlike many people I have been given a solid financial grounding by my father who believed that, "If you can't afford it, you can't buy it".
Downscaling on rentals, cutting down on exorbitant dinners, oh and those exciting spending sprees at the mall do need to cease, because times are tough and there is a serious threat that this financial crisis will last for a lot longer than anyone anticipated.
Just think, every time you fail to pay your account, you are not just sending that business into trouble but every employee that works in that business and their families.
By defaulting payments to companies, especially family owned businesses like mine, you are putting incredible strain on the entire business unit. Every individual in that business is affected by your fraud and as much as we all want to be law-abiding citizens, many of us seek desperate measures when people stop paying their accounts.
Social media has become an important tool at exposing thieves in our community, and sorry if you feel offended at my terminology, but if you fail to pay your accounts, you are a thief!
More and more people are turning to the Internet to share their experiences with local service providers that run away with money without completing jobs that were undertaken.
Name and Shame is the way to go!
By naming the crooks in our community and putting them out there we will be able to help our neighbours not to fall prey to these heartless predators. By naming and shaming we put a stop to the corruption and deception and putting a stop to the lies.
My recent chat with a banking guru has sent me on a serious hunt of those non-payers in our community. There are sites to report these criminals and I encourage all of you out there to name and shame. It is the right thing to do because as we all know, its either exposing their shenanigans or violence. Talking, negotiating and creating easy terms do not apply to most of these con artists.
So if you find yourself in a situation where you just cannot pay back what you owe. Please do me one favour, accept that you are responsible for that payment, call the person you owe money to, make a payment plan even if it is just R50 a week and pay off your debt.
Don't run away and think it will go away - Karma is a bitch and it will eventually catch up with you. Communicate with your creditor and you will see that a huge amount of stress is removed from the situation for both parties involved.
