"Not only do social media news consumers expect the news they see there to be inaccurate, but inaccuracy is the top concern they bring up about information on social media," says Elisa Shearer and Katerina Eva Matsa from the Pew Research Center
"France's first lady Brigitte Macron, 66, is seen looking fresh-faced for the first time since 'having three-hour cosmetic surgery at a private hospital in Paris." For some strange reason this headline, in one of UK's leading tabloids, made me giggle and when I shared it with my husband, he had a little chuckle too.
I assure you, it was not a nasty giggle or anything, it was more a "What the hell " kind of snicker. I mean the whole headline is totally absurd. And anyway, why am I being told about it Do I care Should I care Why should I care All these mixed emotions over what Its not like she is my president's wife, or anyone I know or want to know but here I am writing about it, questioning my attachment to this headline and my reactions to it.
News as we know it has changed and the world is changing as we speak.
This week my Bestie posted on her Facebook a comment that I disagreed with, it says, "If you turn off your news and talk to your neighbours, you'll find that our country is far more harmonious than you're being told."
Sorry darling, not agreeing with this at all, its more like "if everyone would turn off their news and have more conversations with their neighbours, the world would be more harmonious" So few of us talk to the person next door. Do we even know their names
More and more I feel disjointed, separated from what's real and what's fake, as more and more people in my life move into the social media world, so the only time I see them is when they are posting their stories. Even with my own sons, I keep myself updated about their daily activities by following their live feeds.
As much as I'm ready to embrace the change and accept the inevitable, my moral fibre is being stretched here, how can we all remain so detached
There are3.48 billionsocial media users in 2019, with the number of people using the Internet growing over the past year, with more than one million people coming online for the first time each day since January 2018.
On average, we spend 6 hours and 42 minutes online each day. An average of more than 6 hours a day equates to a total of more than 100 days of online time each year for every Internet user. If we extend that average across the total Internet user base of almost 4.4 billion users, we find that humanity will spend a collective total of more than1.2 billion yearsonline in 2019.
With statistics like this, it is no wonder we are slowly moving into the digital world of fakery and silk screens, lets be friends, not just on Facebook.
