Through my eyes

Through my eyes

Are you constantly feeling a little under the weather and not quite yourself You could well be deficient in vitamins and minerals - and it could be this that is wreaking havoc with your mood, weight and even your looks.

Modern food processing and depleted soils mean that even the best diet, rich in fruit and vegetables, may not provide enough nutrients to support optimum health.

We are all feeling it. Sneezing, coughing, wheezing and sniffling, quite a few of my friends were off work for three days with flu like symptoms. The season is changing and our bodies are responding to the changes in their own unique way.

There is so much health advice going around that it's hard to keep up just trying to avoid the common cold So we can start at the basics with rule 1. Wash your hands, most importantly. It is scary to think that the common cold virus can live on human skin for up to two hours.

Having a healthy lifestyle is famous for reducing your risk of contracting colds. It all starts with a moderate level of exercise, enough sleep with good patterns and not too much physical or emotional stress. As easy as that sounds these modern times just aren't that conducive.

Then the fundamental underlying principle for good health is a complete balance of vitamins and minerals. Each one of us could be deficient in a number of different nutrients, however some are more common than others. I imagine it must be difficult to test your own levels, there are just too many vitamins and minerals, so I find it useful to know some of the signs and symptoms of potential deficiency.

I am always under the weather when seasons change. I have many manifestations of my health's shortcomings and I am usually accurate when it comes to self-diagnosing my ailments, and if all else fails there is always Google. Here are some pointers.

Zinc and Vitamin E: Dry or eczema-prone skin, brittle nails, slow wound healing, or have white specks on your nails.

Magnesium: Frequent muscle cramps, fatigue, eye twitching or headaches.

Vitamin C: Bleeding gums, low immunity, dry and splitting hair and rough and dry skin with poor elasticity.

Chromium: Low energy levels, sugar cravings and weight gain.

Prevention is better than cure. This famous proverb offers much wisdom to us in our modern daily life. It teaches us to maintain a healthy, disciplined, and tension free lifestyle in order to avoid negative health issue or disease. Vitamin C is the most important, so much in our lifestyle depletes this vitamin, like smoking and drinking, and I'm not sure how much we get from today's version of orange juice.

Supplementing is almost inevitable and with alcohol playing such a prevalent part in our modern life, it almost become compulsory, if you want to follow prevention methods then add a quality daily vitamin and mineral supplement to your routine. Wash all that down with plenty of good clean water and you are almost out of the woods.

It is good to go to the doctor when we get sick but it is very good when we don't need to go to the doctor all year around. Being healthy is much better than falling sick. Being indifferent or negligent to our health may expose us to illness, which may need a costly cure and perhaps a long road back to normal health.

So everyone take care of your body, get good sound sleep, and don't wait to see a doctor if your symptoms don't improve.
