All we have to do is just look at where we live and take it all in. Concede the beauty that surrounds us and everything else will fall into place.
We are truly privileged to live in a place with such abundance of natural beauty. Where people are still fundamentally good and want to help one another, and where our communities are mindful of their neighbour's welfare.
Who would have thought twenty years ago that my community publication, The Bugle, would be so contributory in so many people's lives
'Through My Eyes' has been such an amazing instrument in putting our community issues at the forefront and establishing links between individuals. So many of you have supported my initiatives and for that I am truly grateful!
New studies attest to the benefits of giving—not just for the recipients but also for the givers' health and happiness, and for the strength of entire communities.
A 2008 study by Harvard Business School professor Michael Norton and his colleagues found that giving money to someone else lifted participants' happiness more than spending it on themselves (despite participants' prediction that spending on themselves would make them happier).
Happiness expert Sonja Lyubomirsky, a professor of psychology at the University of California, Riverside, saw similar results when she asked people to perform five acts of kindness each week for six weeks.
When you give, you're more likely to get back: Several studies, including work by sociologists Brent Simpson and Robb Willer, have suggested that when you give to others, your generosity is likely to be rewarded by others down the line—sometimes by the person you gave to, sometimes by someone else.
Giving can result in personal growth. Giving can help you be a good role model to the young people in your life. And most importantly, giving makes the world a better place for us all to live in. If everyone did their part, maybe we could all reduce the amount of crime, violence, prejudice, and suffering we see in our communities these days.
A couple of weeks ago I told a story that has honestly touched my heart. It is a story that is close to my heart; it is a story about two small boys, Luke and JJ from the Haven of Rest in Tongaat.
I wrote a story and so many of you responded and many of you gave from your own pockets. This week I want to ask for your physical help as I prepare to spread some Festive cheer in the Haven of Rest.
My plan is to put up Christmas trees and fairy lights and put a few gifts underneath the trees, but I need support, as I cannot possibly do it all myself.
Around the 16 December I would like to invite you to join me in giving Haven of Rest a Christmas vibe makeover.
Who is in Email me if you want to be there. We need all the help we can get.
My email address is thebugle@mweb.co.za and lets make a Christmas for them to remember.
