Through My Eyes

Through My Eyes

Author: Kasia Yoko
Date: 2015-07-10
It was a sad night this past Sunday. My son Dominic asked for pasta and I could not find water to cook it. I ran from tap to tap eventually found a slight trickle in the outside tap in the garden.

I was angry with myself about not making provisions for water shortages. I knew very well that it would happen but I just got slack and, ok enough wallowing in my own pity.

The truth is I was trying to block it out. I was not listening to all the negative comments floating around. I avoided Facebook pessimists and those dreaded letters.

After Sunday I succumbed to the inevitable and am partly readymy buckets are filling outside with the beautiful ran water and I myself enjoyed a bucket shower, it was like camping.

My clothes are recycled and the last washing load I did by hand. It feels strange to be counting the drops but I have finally realised that my ignorance is not going to help the big picture of our drought crisis.

I know we want to blame someone for this but the truth is that there is just too many of us fighting for this scares resource. Too many people on the planet, too many industries and manufacturing using it all up and leaving us dry.

Ballito and surrounding areas are not the only ones on this planet that are experiencing the drought. Here are some drought headlines from around the world:

"Alarm bells toll for human civilization as world's 12th largest mega-city to run out of water in just 60 days."

"The city of Sao Paulo is home to 20 million Brazilians, making it the 12th largest mega-city on a planet dominated by short-sighted humans. Shockingly, it has only 60 days of water supply remaining."

"Twenty-six water districts in California to begin rationing water"

"California is slowly fading into desert land. The fight to save the state's water resources has begun at the state level. Governor Jerry Brown recently imposed a 25 per cent mandatory restriction on urban water use."

"Worst Drought in 1,000 Years Predicted for American West"

"Large parts of the U.S. are in for a drought of epic proportions in the second half of this century, scientists warn in a new study that provides the highest degree of certainty yet on the impact of global warming on water supplies in the region."

"Drought-hit North Korea seen able to avoid food crisis"

"North Korea has updated farming methods and switched crops that could help soften the blow of drought and avert a disastrous food shortage, an aid worker and an analyst said on Sunday, after a U.N. official warned of another "huge food deficit"."

"Drought disaster in East Porterville turns to budding health crisis"

Sweating and wincing in pain, Juana Garcia struggled up the stairs to her first shower in four days, pausing after each step. The single mother battling a chronic disease had just walked five blocks from her waterless home.

Garcia, 49, lives with lupus in East Porterville, the epicentre of California's epic drought. The illness makes her sensitive to the sun and constantly tired. It also mimics rheumatoid arthritis, triggering searing pain to her knees and hips.

Trust me these are just a few stories going around the Internet. You can check for yourself. We have to now all become accountable for our consumption and realise that it is 'Mother Nature' talking to us, showing us warning signs that we must conform or suffer the consequences.

I wish all of you a fabulous week. Hope all of you are enjoying the rain!
