What's The Issue?

What's The Issue?

Well there you have it, plain for all the world to see. We will not take the rule of law seriously in this country. Anybody who thought that the South African government was going to stop Omar Al Bashir from fleeing the country. So far to date we have let every despot that ever set foot in SA to linger at will and leave as soon as he had consumed enough. Hell, we are even famous for making the South African taxpayer foot the bill for a despot president and his entourage like when that dude from the Congo was running away from his people who wanted his head. You and I put him up at a five star hotel in Pretoria, for weeks.

So you see we are more likely to make him president than to arrest him. What with our own civil war going on and genocide against the South African farmer spiralling out of control, we can't be seen to be a nation of hypocrites. So many were clinging to the hope that we would arrest him and bring him to justice, however there is something even more sinister at play here. Some politician or spokesperson of some sort called for the African Nations to withdraw from the International Criminal Court, citing bias and accusing the ICC of pitting African leaders against each other. So I guess the three hundred thousand or so who have died in the conflict in Darfur and the nearly one and a half million who have been displaced, are just so irrelevant when compared to a despot megalomaniac. Why was he invited here in the first place, our leadership was well aware of his status? Is this a clear indication of the African Union's our country's attitude towards the ICC? Please don't answer these questions.

Some inspiring news came out of Gauteng when the ANC leader of that region made a very brave move against the dubious Nkandla report presented by Police minister Nathi Nhleko. He pointed out that the National Executive Committee of the ANC had not adopted the report. So maybe Thuli is not wrong after all and maybe, just maybe the additional security measures that are still to be added to Jacobs Nkandla home, will be paid for by Jacob and not you and I.

In other news China and the US have embarked on joint naval exercises in the waters near Hawaii. Historic stuff. With tensions in the South China Sea so high, this might just be the oil needed to calm the waters. In similar drills with Russia and their Asia Pacific allies in the South China Sea, Russian Deputy Defence Minister was quoted as saying "We are concerned by US policies in the region, especially since every day it becomes increasingly focused on a systemic containment of Russia and China." He went on to add "Despite our concerns about the US global missile defense architecture, they continue a policy of disrupting strategic stability, adding a regional segment of an anti-missile 'shield' in the Asia-Pacific,"

I'm confused.
