Through My Eyes

Through My Eyes

Author: Kasia Yoko
Date: 2015-02-27
A recent scientific news item made me slightly sad and out of sorts. The article said that our holidays would soon be uploaded to our minds and instead of travelling to far away places we will be able to download a holiday into our brains and experience vivid emotions and familiarities.

US physicist Dr Michio Kaku revealed his theories on how we may control our brains in the future, which includes implanting 'memories' to make us think we've been on holiday. Dr Michio Kaku is a futurist, populariser of science, and theoretical physicist, as well as a bestselling author. He is the co-founder of string field theory (a branch of string theory), and continues Einstein's search to unite the four fundamental forces of nature into one unified theory.

The holiday of the future will still provide memories of strolls along sunny beaches, the sensation of sand between your toes and the peaceful rush of the ocean, but there will be one crucial difference. You won't have ever actually been away - in fact you might not have even left your home.

Instead, people will download memories to their brains to make them feel as if they have been on a sun-kissed holiday. That's just one of the many realities we could face as we learn to manipulate the human mind, he tells us. In his latest book, The Future of the Mind, takes a look at how rapid advancements could bring about huge changes in how we understand and use our brains in the next 50 to 100 years.

Dr Michio Kaku's theories on the future of the mind are wide-ranging, from the possibilities of telepathy to controlling "programmable matter" with our thoughts alone. At times, Kaku's opinions sound purely like science fiction, but he's convinced that these are developments we'll see not just in the distant future, but by the end of the century.

I cannot imagine anything worse. I mean the best thing about travel is that we are able to experience different emotions every time we travel how horrible to imagine that we one day will be able to plug our brains to a "mother" computer and choose where we want to be and how we want to feel.

To think that just twenty years ago our lives were free from laptops and cell phones. We did not have to know where our loved ones were 24/7. We did not have to know what a friend, who you have not spoken to for thirty years, had for breakfast.

As much as I welcome technology and support the new inventions, this scares me. What a dreadfully depressing prospect! However with an entire generation of young adults already permanently plugged in to some device or other and living their lives vicariously via social media sites and computer games, what do we expect.

There's not much fun getting old but at least I've lived my allotted span myself; my many travels were not generated and implanted by some machine, nor were the emotional highs and lows of my life's experiences created in a laboratory while my body lay inert on some gurney having them injected by a technician in a white coat.

Here's to being authentic! And creating real life experiences that enrich us and make us human! Here's to the next holiday adventure.
