Through My Eyes

Through My Eyes

"Imagination disposes of everything; it creates beauty, justice, happiness, which is everything in this world." Ñ Blaise Pascal

"What kind of friend lets you have his Ferrari for the weekend?" asked one of my cool buddies, shaking his heada very special friend indeed.

I needed a grand entrance for a Gala Dinner Ball and was cheeky enough to ask.

There is no way to explain the sensation of driving a Ferrari - besides being everyone's new best friend, you can't help feeling like a million bucks and here's where my story begins to get interesting.

While checking into the magnificently regal Beverly Hills Hotel on Friday night, flashing blue lights distracted me and I was politely asked to move my red 'dream machine', to make place for the blue lights parade. As I approached the front door I noticed that it was His Royal Highness, our Zulu King, Goodwill Zwelithini whom had just arrived with his family.

On the spur of the moment I decided to join the welcoming party and stood in line to shake his hand, which really amused the King, he looked at me and actually laughed. An hour later I was on my way out, in the lobby waiting for the lift, it stopped and the King and his family were ensconced - the lift was almost full and I would not dream to try and impose, however the King gave me a big smile and said, "Please join us."

How could I refuse? Standing very close to the King, shoulder to shoulder, I said, "Its quiet a privilege to be sharing a lift with you, your majesty." He laughed again and said, "Why?" I said, "Because you are a KING." To which he responded, "And you drive a Ferrari."

It was my time to laugh out loud. Who would have thought that the King would notice such 'trivialities'? His next statement surprised me, "So can I take it for a drive?" he asked. Not quiet sure how to respond, I proposed to take the King for a drive, to which he asked, "Don't you trust me?"

"Why? With me driving you would be in safe hands." I responded and added. "This car is not easy to drive."

"What? You mean this?" said the King while moving his fingers indicating that he knows all about the steering wheel paddles of the Ferrari.

As the lift stopped and we said our goodbyes, I was amazed at how easy it was to communicate with the Zulu monarch and what a fabulously cool guy he is. It also confirmed that if you drive a Ferrari you are everyone's friend and there are no exceptions.

I never thought that the King would be a Ferrari man, he strikes me more as a Jaguar or Rolls Royce man, and anyway we live and learn everyday. I have to be totally honest here, giving back the Ferrari was a Cinderella moment for me, but I guess its just one of those things.

Thank you so much to all my special friends for that fairy tale moment.
