Through my eyes

Through my eyes

Author: Kasia Yoko
Date: 2018-04-20

Our daily thoughts, feelings, and actions are like temporary clouds that come and go in an endless sky that, like the enlightened mind, is beyond birth and death.

"It's hard to believe that Ania, having so many plans for the future, is not with us anymore! There is never a good time to die, nor are we ever ready for it, especially for a sudden death, and a person as close to me as my own mother was, 12 years my junior. It is a terrible blow for us, which will be hard to reconcile with! We say goodbye to you, Ania and see you in a better world !! Your brother Stanislaw." This is my father's last goodbye to his younger sister, Anna.

It is a sad day in our life as we bid farewell to my aunt Professor Anna Clarke. She died from cardiac arrest last Friday. One day she was discussing her life plans with my father, the next day she was gone.

I found my dad in a pool of tears, "Time passes so fast," he said wiping his eyes. He looked at me shaking his head as if trying to shake free from his memories.

"I remember the day she was born." My father told me, "The midwife arrived at our home and kicked us out on the street, telling us to go and play and not to come back until we were told to. It was cold, the street was covered in ice and we slipped and skated down our road until it was time to meet the new baby of the house."

It has been very hard couple of weeks for our family and a huge loss for my cousins Christopher and Gabie and uncle Brian.

My aunt was a real academic, Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), Medical Microbiology and Bacteriology. My first memory of her was in my grandmothers' house, sitting on my grandmothers' bed surrounded by her books, deeply engaged in her reading.

It is with a heavy heart and true sorrow that I bid farewell to Professor Anna Maria Clarke from the University of Fort Hare. She may no longer be with us, however she continues to shine for eternity.

"What is born will die, What has been gathered will be dispersed, What has been accumulated will be exhausted, What has been built up will collapse, And what has been high will be brought low." By Sogyal Rinpoche.

It can be deeply humbling to consider that one day we will die and that there is nothing, not one thing, we can do to prevent this. We are utterly impotent and powerless against this total certainty. In fact, death is the one thing we can be sure about in life.

Scary thought for this April afternoon. Stay safe everyone.
