Through My Eyes

Through My Eyes

Author: Kasia Yoko

Fifty thousand beautiful people gathered to witness the greatest race in KZN. This year's Vodacom Durban July was a show of posh splendour and everyone who attended would agree with me that 2013 was the year of the most beautiful people at the races.

This was also the first time that I took full advantage of the festivities and threw myself into party mode. And as I kicked of my pretentious black stilettoes and slipped on my dancing pumps the world turned into a colourful disco dance floor.

Sparkles of light twinkled before me as I twilled and spun and hopped. Soon I realised that I was not alone, oh no, I was surrounded by a thousand smiling faces. I was lost in a magic wonderland encircled by disco kings and queens.

With FNB as my host, I could not ask for a better venue. The MTV stage provided entertainment while the business class marquee provided the drinks, the snacks and the brilliant company - more beautiful people - they were everywhere.

One thing that surprised me at this year's Vodocom July was the lack of serious punters. As I explored and scanned my fellow guests, looking for tips and on the winning horses I found that the venue that I was privy to was filled with party animals and not gamblers. Oh yes, there was some serious gambling going on but it was secondary to the dancing and swaying and the bopping.

Oh gosh what can I say beside the fact that the Vodacom Durban July was one of my favourite parties of the year and what made it so amazing? It was the peopleI met so many cool people I tried to speak to everyone but one person in particular got me so very intrigued.

Her name is Nomsa Theledi and she hails from Phalaborwa. She runs her own bed and breakfast there but her real passion is the ingenious rhino handbags that she designs and manufactures. They are sculptures of the endangered species, which serve as handbag, and she donates the proceeds of the bag to the 'Save the Rhino Foundation'.

Nomsa dressed like an African Queen. She stood out of the crowed with her feathered hat and her tiger print dress. Everything about Nomsa was exotic and fabulous, just like the person. If you would like to contact Nomsa, her email address is bothabelo@topmail.co.za

Wishing everyone a happy and festive week!
