A must try - New Culinary Experience in Umhlanga 4320 Shisa Nyama
Date: 2017-11-23
She is better known for her roles as a beauty queen, an actress and a billionaire's wife, however Sorisha Naidoo is a pretty astute businesswoman in her own right. She has single handily build her beauty industry empire, Umhlanga Laser and Aesthetic Clinic and recently opened a branch in Chatsworth, last week Sorisha embarked on a much bolder business venture with the opening of her 4320 Shisa Nyama Restaurant in Umhlanga Centre.
4320 Shisa Nyama is an African themed restaurant, which aims to cater to the local community, Sorisha is hoping that she can introduce contemporary Zulu cuisine not just to the locals but also to the holidaymakers and tourists that are visiting Umhlanga.
"I want to introduce a laid back environment in my restaurant." Sorisha told The Bugle, "You are welcome to arrive in jeans and sneakers and feel at home here. We want you to come and satisfy your cravings after a night out as our kitchen will stay open until 11:30pm and everyone is welcome."
For the last couple of months Sorisha, together with her Executive Chef Cyprian Khumalo, have been developing the 4320 Shisa Nyama menu in Sorisha's home kitchen, with many fascinating private tastings, which led to the easy and uncomplicated menu they settled for in the restaurant.
"We have been developing our palates and we believe that we found the right equilibrium," Sorisha told The Bugle, "This is just the right progression for 4320 Shisa Nyama to join the league of first grade restaurants in Umhlanga."
Getting the restaurant opened on time has not been easy, but Sorisha has pulled out all the stops with the support of her friends and family and has opened on time, treating everyone to a taster of the menu before she opened.
With not much time to spend with her young family, Sorisha said she has been blessed with incredible support from them, "Vivian has been very supportive." Sorisha says with much pride, "He has babysat the children every night while I was here with the team getting it all ready for the opening."
Executive Chef Cyprian Khumalo is not new to a fast passed kitchen, he has been involved with restaurant operations and management, however his heart was always in the food and preparations. His love for cooking came from his grandmother's kitchen, where as the youngest sibling, it was his duty to prepare the evening meals for the family.
"This is such an honour for me to be able to share my love of African cooking with this community." Cyprian told The Bugle, "I want to introduce a new trend and a new vibe in dining and my big hope is that this menu will appeal to everyone." He is ultimately hoping to make the unfamiliar familiar and change people's views about Shisa Nyama cuisine.
Shisa nyama, (direct translation 'hot meat') is a Zulu slang expression for 'buy and braai', which started off as a way for township butcheries to increase their weekend sales. But they soon became a gathering place for both up-and-coming urban professionals wanting to reconnect with their roots, and local township residents looking for company and a place to drink and eat. They very quickly evolved and are now much more than venues to eat braaid meat.
Sorisha and Cyprian are two beautiful individuals. They do not just share a love of fine food but also a love of hospitality and service, together they are hoping to bring about a place where people meet over a glass of craft beer and a length of wors and 'dirty pap' or some fried halumi and creamy mash for the vegetarians. No one got left behind on this menu and there is something unique to experience for all taste buds.
