Where have all the good men gone
As our country spirals deeper and deeper into recession, I have to ask; has human decency also taken a nosedive
It has to be said, here on this platform, that the service in our community has gone down and you can see it wherever you go, hence most of my shopping now is done online and I refuse to venture out unless it is absolutely necessary.
From shop attendants to bank tellers to local mechanics, the service we are receiving is absolutely shocking. Gone are the days where you get greeted when you walk through the doors of a local business. Gone are the days where sweet looking people come up to you and ask, "Can I help you "
You can see the lack of culture, education and basic humility, which frankly peeves me off. But what hurts me most is that there is no respect left for our elderly, who are treated as if they have leprosy.
My father's recent treatment at a local mechanic shop shocked me to the corehe told me a story of how he arrived at a local mechanic, having made the appointment to have his oil changed, only to be spoken down to and ridiculed by the arrogant and condescending staff member.
Even though he was there early and was the only booking in their books that day, he was made to wait and then was told that he would need to leave his car overnight for something that literally takes half an hour to do.
Can local businesses afford to be so casual about their services And can they afford to disrespect customers, no matter what age
I guess because it's my father, I am double angry and so close to naming and shaming here, but what good would that do It's obvious that the mechanics in this particular Ballito business don't care. I guess its just a matter of time before this community stops caring about them, because if you find it hard to be respectful to an eighty year old man, who is coming to your door to give you money for a service you say you provide, then you shouldn't have a place in this community.
Elders remind us of the big questions of life: What really matters to me What gives me a true sense of contentment, of feeling useful inside What are the moments I cherish and how do I remember those as guideposts for living my life How do my actions, thoughts, and behaviours further the person whom I would like to become What is the vision I have of myself, of the society within which I live, to which I would like to contribute What are the values I hold dear and for which I want to stand What would I like to leave behind when I part from this world
These questions are central, I believe, to living a life that is worth living. Respecting our elders and their position in society is key to a successful community existence. It is in joining with the elders of today, that each one of us can be enriched and deepened, that our culture and societies can be reminded of what makes us essentially human.
Wishing you all a fun week ahead.
