Through my eyes

Through my eyes

Author: Kasia Yoko
Date: 2018-03-09

I love my jobbut it is very tough to put up with when sad, disgruntled people out their frustrations on you, oh just because you happen to be the closest thing they can vent on.

So often I come across people who hate their jobs, hate their boss and basically hate what they're doing. I pray that you are not in that place

I see it on so many people's faces, wherever I go people tell me how unhappy they are working their jobs and getting no personal satisfaction.

Its hard economic times and we have all been affected by this horrible slump, not just in our economy but also in our lives. It affects all of us this quiet uncertainty, "Are we going to be alright "

It was so good to meet someone who is just happy to be doing what he is doing and you can see the light shining bright in his eyes.

Last week I had an amazing opportunity to spend time with Max Du Preez, for those that don't know who he is, read my story on page 5.

Max is not just a journalist, columnist, economist, political analystit would take this whole page to describe all that he does, so I will stop right there. Max is also a father to two teenagers and an author who way behind deadline and also feeling the crunch of the changing times.

Spending time with Max in a beautiful orchid courtyard of the Oyster Box Hotel provided some real revelations. It is not just you and me that are grafting until all hours of the day and night to make ends meet, he is in a similar boat.

With two kids still studying Max needs to do all that he does to keep his family happy, he does not dream of retirement or long lavish holidays, he is thinking of his new home in Rondebosch and the flower awning he is planning to plant around his courtyard.

Max lectures in many universities in South Africa, even one in Holland. He gives regular talks on the state of our nation and our economy. He is outspoken and liberal and often reviled by his peers, some who may see him as a traitor, however he still loves what he does and wakes up each morning and prepares for a new day's adventure.

Max has something that so many of us lack, and that is enthusiasm. He embraces each event with an open mind and an open heart. He gives his opinions based on his tremendous knowledge, not just of history, politics and economy, but his knowledge of people in power.

And as he prepares to face the hundred plus audience, with very serious issues on say, our new president and the future of our country. His gaze fell on the flaming pink bougainvillea that was framing our terrace and he said, "I thing that will look good in my garden, what do you think "

Oh to be that content.

And with that I would like you all to stop what you are doing, and admire the brilliant bougainvillea that seems to be blossoming out of proportion, all around us.
