Never too young to build an empirenever too old to chase a dream.
Recently I have embarked on a massive detour from the happy comfort zone I find myself in. The detour is a huge mental adjustment; it will take lots of motivation, energy and willpower. It will take me to a place that is not familiar and frankly so scary.
After analysing and stressing, I made up my mind to move forward and at least try. I mean the worst that can happen is that it will not work out.
We all have dreams, thoughts on things we want to do or have in life. Most of us reflect on them often, imagining and wishing they could become reality. More often than not, we sit in our cubicle, or on our couch in our pyjamas, daydreaming and then formulating reasons to keep those dreams just that: dreams.
Here are some of the thoughts that have run through my head as I contemplated pursuing my dream:
- My parents are going to kill me
- People will think I'm crazy
- My life will be screwed if it doesn't work out
- I'll have to sacrifice too much to make it happen
- I'm too young to go there
- I'm too old to start afresh
- I'm too busygosh, I am so busy
- I don't have enough money
- I'm not smart enough, knowledgeable enough, tough enough
- I'm not ready yet
- What if I fail
The list goes on and on, but you get the idea. I worked to relegate my dream to "someday".
A lot of us put off our dreams, the things we want to achieve most until that fateful "someday"
We tell ourselves the time isn't right to change how I'm living and chase my dream. Years go by; the voice in your head continues to rattle off the reasons not to start chasing your dreams. Those reasons then grow into the belief that "it's too late to pursue your dream" and then that dream dies. Left to be filed under "What if " and buried in regret.
Even though we are scared to death of failure, that does not meant that we must let the voice in our head steal our dreams. Today more then ever I believe that perceived security and materialism prevents people like me from pursuing our dreams and discovering our true potential.
Here's the thing: it's never too late to start chasing dreams. You are never too much or too little of anything. Don't put off starting to work toward your dream; don't do that to yourself.
If you have a dream, join me, lets do it together!
