Through My Eyes

Through My Eyes

Author: Kasia Yoko

So there was this great excitement in the air last Friday in Ballito, "It's going to rain!" the voices rang out, "Watch, the rain will come tonight." They said. Well anyone who looked at Wind Guru would know that there was zero possibilities of rain on the horizon and only the divine intervention would bring on the rain clouds, however it did not.

It is amazing what we can do with a little bit of faith and a whole lot of hype. It was a little silly though, posting the comments on Facebook and declaring the miracle will come today. So we all waited and waited and hoped that the rain would come but it was not meant to be.

I was amazed at the amount of people who gathered at a Ballito school grounds on Friday morning to pray for rain with KZN farmer and evangelist, Angus Buchan, kneeling down on the rugby field, he announced, "We are here to pray against the sin of unbelief and ask our God to do the impossible: send down the rain. He is the Rainmaker and we are His sons!"

Buchan urged the community to believe that rain would come. "When we are at the lowest point, Jesus can step in. Every drought ends with rain. Prepare yourselves for a miracle!". It was so good to see the community coming together and praying for a common cause.

Real pity that the rain did not come and that we are still on the brink of a severe drought, "Unless it rains significantly more than usual over the next two weeks, we're talking about cane farmers in the north coast belt and Zululand heading into survival mode," Mike Black, president of the KwaZulu-Natal Agricultural Union stated recently.

This is bad news for all of us, not just the farmers. Drought can have serious health, social, economic and political impacts with far-reaching consequences. As we all know water is one of the most essential commodities for human survival, second only to breathable air. So when there is a drought, which by definition means having too little water to meet current demands, conditions can become difficult or dangerous very quickly.

The snowball affect places strain on grass and grain supply used to feed livestock and poultry. When drought undermines or destroys food sources, people go hungry, food prices go up and we all suffer.

As we all know, we can live for weeks without food, but only a few days without water. In the Koran can be found the words"We have created every living thing from water" reflecting on the paramount importance of water.

With frightening statistics linking up to 80% of all deaths from illness come from water born diseases, it no wonder water is such an important commodity.A sobering fact is that a child dies of water born diseases aboutevery 15 seconds(that's about 12 children just since you started reading this article). By this time tomorrow, another 2,500 will be dead.Lets preserve this valuable life source and save water - together with Angus I join in the prayer for rain.
