South African Surfers Make History at World Surfing Competition in Ecuador

In a momentous achievement for South African surfing, veteran surfer Jordy Smith clinched his first World Championship Tour victory in eight years at the Surf City El Salvador Pro.

The 37-year-old Smith triumphed in an all-South African final against compatriot Matthew McGillivray at Punta Roca, showcasing the nation's dominance in the sport. Smith achieved a heat total of 14.26 out of 20, with strong wave scores of 7.33 and 6.93. He dedicated his win to his father and wife, stating, "I've always wanted to ride his board in a final and to win on it, and that dream has come true. I love you Dad."

McGillivray, who had previously eliminated two event champions, fell short with a score of 9.33 due to inconsistent wave conditions. Despite the loss, his performance contributed to South Africa's remarkable presence in the competition.

This victory elevates Smith to fifth place in the world rankings, while McGillivray's impressive run underscores the depth of talent within South African surfing. With four of the 11 tour events completed, the next three will take place in Australia before a cut reduces the field by one-third. The season culminates in a final showdown in Fiji with the top five surfers competing for the title.

South Africa's surfing community is celebrating this historic moment, which not only highlights individual excellence but also signifies the country's growing influence on the global surfing stage.
