"As I began to love myself i freed myself of anything that is not good for my health - food, people, things, situation, and everything that drew me down and away from myself" Charlie Chaplin
Summer is almost here and you wouldn't even know about it, as we experience one cold front after another, but wait its almost here, the unbearable heat, the 100% humidity, sweaty armpits and the thousands of holidaymakers. And I'm here to welcome it all.
It's about this time when we attempt to get into those swimming costumes that we start thinking 'Jeez, time to get healthy, lose a few pounds and attempt to get that perfect summer body'. Oh heck, but who are we kidding!
There are so many fabulous fads about weight loss and dieting, we are all searching for instant gratification. We want to be thin by Sunday, so we can look good at the family braai. But as every book on dieting and nutrition states, there is just no easy way to do it.
Apparently there's no such thing as 'detoxing', in medical terms, it's all nonsense. Diet and exercise is the only way to get healthy. But which of the latest fad regimes can really make a difference We look at the facts
It is all part of that 'magic cure' people crave. The easy alternative to learning how to eat properly, making time for decent nutrition and exercise. Shopping for food that will make us healthy and not using an excuse that 'because its holidays', we can allow ourselves a few cheats. Oh but who am I kidding, off course we will be cheating, because life is too short to be that serious about dieting.
On a serious note however, at this time of year especially, there is the added guilt and desperation that follows on from Xmas and New Year. We tend to eat more, we definitely drinking more; we consume a lot of junk while sitting around the festive table.
And we have been doing it for centuries. To be fair my mom always brags about the fourteen dishes that she presents to her guests at Christmas, its a tradition and we cannot change it, so why am I even talking about it
For years now people I know have been doing this dry January 'thing'. Where they think 31 days of not drinking will reset their liver. In fact most of the people I know leave it for February, as it is the shortest month of the year.
Wouldn't it be nice if our diet, our shape and our overall appearance were not on the list of worries for 2020 Wouldn't it be fantastic to develop a lifestyle that is consistent, that is healthy and sustainable Instead of dreaming of that one miracle pill that will make us skinny, we could just be skinny what a beautiful dream that is
Now get up and get your bum in the sun and don't worry about what anyone thinks, the reality is that this is probably the thinnest you'll ever be, it sure is the youngest you'll ever be so don't waste your energies on silly fads, just be happy with who you are and enjoy the summer.
