Dube TradePort's R3 million investment in solar for local schools

Dube TradePort's R3 million investment in solar for local schools

Date: 2019-07-19
Dube TradePort Special Economic Zone has commissioned its 10th photovoltaic solar system for Acacia Primary School, as part of the organisations Corporate Social Investment program.

Dube TradePort Special Economic Zone is emerging as a key pillar of the development of KwaZulu-Natal, through its mixed business ecosystem, which attracts investment and creates jobs; both within the precinct and through wide array businesses that supply and receive goods as well as services from firms that are located within the precinct.

Dube TradePort 's Corporate Social Investment (CSI) program, therefore, reflects the organisation's desire to positively contribute towards the upliftment of its broader community, through initiatives that improve access to education, environmental awareness and economic empowerment.

"Our programs are aimed at ensuring that young South Africans are educated and go on to acquire the relevant skills that will enable them to take full advantage of the opportunities that we along with rest of the business community and the government of KwaZulu-Natal are bringing into the region." Notes Mr Hamish Erskine, CEO, Dube TradePort Special Economic Zone

The 10 kWp solar system installed at Acacia Primary, will augment the energy needs of the school, representing a projected saving of 38% of the school's energy needs, at an investment of R236 000, 00 by Dube TradePort.

Over the last 8 years, Dube TradePort Special Economic Zone has installed similar installations at 10 schools, within the neighbouring communities of Verulam, Tongaat, La Mercy, Phoenix, and Inanda, a valued at R 3 million. These schools are located in the vicinity of the Dube TradePort precinct.

Mr Erskine added, " Through our previous engagement, schools had brought it to our attention that electricity and water account for a large proportion of their costs associated with providing a quality education within our communities, which led us to respond through the provision of these solar systems, as part of our Corporate Social Investment Programme."

In the last 8 years, Dube TradePort Special Economic Zone, through its Corporate Social Investment Programme under the three pillars of education and skills development, environment sustainability and socio-economic upliftment has provided schools with solar installations, rainwater harvesting facilities, science laboratory kits, school textbooks and libraries. Students have benefited through receiving full sets of school uniforms, sanitary towels for girls, and students throughout KwaZulu-Natal have received bursaries, while graduates have had access to Dube TradePort's comprehensive internship programme for, to name a few.

As an entity of the KwaZulu-Natal provincial governments Department for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Dube TradePort Special Economic Zone is a driver of economic development with the region and will continue to provide the infrastructure upon which KwaZulu-Natal and its citizens can buildup on to grow from strength to strength.
