"Nothing in life is to be feared; it is only to be understood." Marie Curie
Recently, while dining with a cool friend of many liberal debates, as usual we were trying to solve world problemsas one does in these uncertain times in South African history.
Wayne and I were discussing world economies, the wars that are already raging all around, our immediate securities and how they are influencing our lives.
The question that kept popping up in my head was, "How can we address these overwhelming problems of the world, our nation, and our neighbourhoods " I eventually asked my friend.
To which he answered, "It must begin at home - with us - on a very personal level. Peace, honesty, respect for the creation and the environment, respect for others, healthy families, justice, and love have to start in our own hearts first. Only then can these qualities, needed for the survival of human societies and the human race, begin to spread out into our neighbourhoods, our nation, and the world." He replied.
It all sounds so easy and reasonable. Oh yes, let us just start the peace process at home and all will be great
Well it is not like that. As we all know it takes generations to introduce new patterns. It takes centuries to reprogram our minds and as we all know, Rome was not built in a day.
Sure, we all have the power within us to make significant changes, not just in our own lives, the lives of our close relatives and friends, individually and collectively we have the power to change the world.
There are examples of people who have made significant changes in our history, people like Marie Curie, Mother Teresa, Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, these people were just like you and me when they started but somehow they understood that they had the power to change livesone life at a time and so they did.
Reading about these successful individuals they have one thing in common they work their butts off. They are not scared to make mistakes and they don't waste their energies lamenting their failures. They continue to invent ways to make a difference.
I so often meet people who in their small way are trying to make this world a better place. My new editorial contributor, Veushka Pather is one of these people, through her dance and her spiritual journey she is making a difference in so many people's lives. We are so lucky to have her sharing her spiritual journey with us.
