You see it started with a simple quote my husband shared with me, it went something like, "If you want to keep moving, you just have to keep moving". It's not the fancy low carb diets and the protein shakes and the calorie restrictions that will make you strong and healthy in your middle age, it's the physical movement you place on your body.
Let's not kid ourselves. Getting older is a drag, and middle age is particularly fraught with tension. Part of the problem is that aging often requires change, but most women like me don't want to change our wardrobes and start wearing sensible shoes just because we are getting old.
Someone recently said to me, "If you want to age gracefully, you'll need to make some changes." Gosh am I tired of changes, it really sucks but sadly it's the only way.
Very few people look as attractive in middle age as they did in their younger years. So take a walk down memory lane if you must, but don't get depressed if you run into your younger self. The goal is to look as good as you can—and be as healthy as you can—not recreate the body and face you had decades ago.
Gone are the days when you could stay up all night and still make it to work with a glowing complexion and a spring in your step.
Fewer hours of sleep are more likely to show up on your face, true, however it's also linked to a greater risk of diabetes and other health problems, which become even more important as you age.
Sadly our culture tends to sell the message that young equals sexy, but you don't have to buy into it. You should have the confidence and freedom to dress and feel as sexy as you want to, and do not give into the peer pressures.
There is just no going around it Quite simply, you are going to be the same age tomorrow whether you choose to take action or not. And if you fail Well, I could make the argument that it's not about the resultbut the journeybutI won't. I'll save that for another column.
You are not getting any younger and you are not too old ... you're just where you are ... the place in time where you set off on another one oflife's journey.
Whatever you do, don't get too caught up in pragmatic accountings of why you should not or could not do whatever you were meant to do in life. Remember that life on this planet is a far more mysterious journey than most of us give it credit for, and that when you show up at the door of something, more often than not it opens.
After all that has been said and done, just remember one thing, you are not too old and it's not too late.
