What is the issue

What is the issue

Heads were spinning like tops in a schoolyard when Vladimir announced that he was pulling out of Syria and taking his air force and army back home. Some people don’t believe him but you can go and check, there is glaring evidence of the Russian jets taking off, heading home and leaving the Middle East to carry on without them.

Pundits are shaking each other’s hands and patting each other on the back saying how wonderful it is and what a real sign of a true peace process. Scoff! I am sorry but I do not share their enthusiasm. From where I sit, this is going to get ugly very fast, but before you start preparing voodoo dolls in my image with knitting needles to stick through me, I must tell you that I wish peace on that nation before almost anything else on my wish list. Almost.

Other things that I wish for and in no particular order are that people in power, especially in this country will take heed of the anti nuclear protests in Tokyo on the anniversary of the Fukushima disaster, and of course and educated president for our beautiful country.

I wish our Government would not behave disgracefully as the Appeal court accused them of doing but hey there is so much I could wish for and still there would be more.

So enough wishing let me just complain a little. Our economy is teetering on the brink of becoming junk status and our top shelf police unit decided to gun for our finance minister. This harassment of probably the most important minister for our country at this time, is questionable to say the least.

With rumours abounding that his job was offered to him by the puppeteers of our beloved government, Pravin is doing the best he can, going around the world with begging bowl in hand trying to prevent the Rand becoming even more junk than it is already and he gets this treatment. Is it possible that we can be behaving like this, as a nation, at a time when the whole world is watching us more closely than ever before?

I feel as if our potential is waning, dribbling away slowly. There was a time when I was so proud of the nation of South Africa, even with our divisions and our limitations, I felt the power of our potential, I felt as though we were on the path to greatness. I even think I believed we were. Then slowly but surely everything changed. A painting of a dick became more important than the feeding of impoverished children and the downhill slide seems to have just continued. Not unabated, more like it is being shoved, forcefully into the gutter. We had so much potential, we achieved miracles together and now through divisiveness and petty politicking, corruption and greed, nepotism and fraud, our nation’s potential lies in the throws of death, jerking and jolting with its last breath hissing slowly out of its tightly drawn lips. We better vote properly, it may be our last chance.
