There are a growing number of online "do- it- yourself" divorce sites, which offers people the ability to get divorced without assistance of an attorney. Whilst there may be a few instances where a couple can successfully go this route, the reality is that in the over whelming majority of cases, this would not be a prudent thing to do. There are many drawbacks to these do it yourself online divorce actions.

Handling a divorce on your own could result in costly mistakes and end up costing you far more than if you did it right the first time. If there are any mistakes or omissions on the divorce pleadings and the divorce is granted on the document, it can become a nightmare to try to rectify the error, if not impossible. You will not be given another chance to review the settlement once the divorce is finalized. Hence omitting crucial details could see you live a life of regret for the rest of your life

Often the reasons for a marriage breaking down are the following: lack of love and affection by one spouse towards the other; infidelity; drug or alcohol abuse, domestic violence, some or other addiction that causes the parties to become polarized. Hence all of these factors usually result in emotions of hurt and rejection being experienced. Off course where there are children involved, it becomes even more risky not to get proper legal advice. However the biggest threat to online divorce lies in lack of knowledge of what your legal rights and obligations are.

An attorney who is well equipped in the field of divorce law will easily explain and secure all your rights in this regard. So for example you may unwittingly agree to a settlement with your spouse, without knowing that you are well entitled to a whole lot more than he or she is offering you. Your attorney must be able to offer you the correct legal advice, but also be robust enough to fight on your behalf. You need a lawyer who understands all the legal issues and gets you the best deal out of it.

Choosing the right attorney with proper experience will give you peace of mind that you have the best settlement deal, in your particular situation. A key factor is to know what type of marriage you have. This will determine what assets you are allowed to take out of the marriage, how the assets of both you and your spouse are to be valued and divided.

At our office, we take the time to understand your needs and then develop a legal strategy that will enable you to achieve your goal. In order to provide you with the best possible outcome, we will explore various options with you, including having a negotiated settlement, mediation or indeed that the matter needs to be aggressively contested. Instructing an attorney to advise you on your rights in a divorce action even if it's to look at a settlement agreement would be money well spent.
