"The accused is found not guilty," Judge Jeanette Traverso said as she ruled that the state failed to prove his association in a murder plot and that prosecution witnesses lacked credibility and contradicted each other. Dewani showed no emotion when the decision was read out, he remained cold and stoic and totally without sentiment.
I have followed this story with interest. It was the eye-catching images of their wedding day, the opulent traditional wedding images. A happy couple depicted on their wedding day. Life was just beginning for Anni.
I am sure she was planning to start a family, maybe even knew how many children she was going to have. Who knows? She probably had names picked out for her brood.
The agony and torment the parents of slayed Anni must be inconceivable, their beautiful and talented daughter no more. Precious life cut short by someone with no respect for the living.
Anni's family have conducted themselves with quiet, unassuming dignity throughout this whole ordeal. I am so very sorry that they have not been given the answers that they so desperately wanted and deserved.
I keep thinking? What would I do, if my child were murdered the same way as Anni?
Such a tragic thing, such a lovely young woman full of smiles in those photos, imagine how terrified she was in her final minutes - as a family you would never get over that would you? As parents you would torture yourself over not being able to help her. I hope the truth comes out soon, so these people can get some peace.
It was a very weak case, based on the testimony of a man who has a reason to lie and on circumstantial evidence. I do feel for her family but can't help but feel they need to assuage their feelings of guilt for pushing her into the marriage. He is very wealthy, however the marriage was doomed from the start, even without these tragic events.
I think the question that needs to be asked is why an obviously gay man with a taste for sado masochistic sex with male prostitutes and a highly educated and beautiful heterosexual woman 'decided' to get married in the first place. Perhaps the two families need to examine closely what cultural or other pressures were brought to bear on this tragic couple.
Having said that, if he did do it, it would be an act of callousness and ruthlessness beyond belief. However according to the law he is now an innocent man without a stain on his character - something we now all have to accept.
