Through My Eyes

Through My Eyes

Author: Kasia Yoko

All those who watched the Wimbledon Men's Final this year would recognize the masters at the peak of their game, Roger and Novak are true heroes of tennis. Watching them play is something like a magic Game of Thrones episodes.

This year my Wimbledon game was all it was meant to be. A delicious glass of red wine, a roaring fire and a big bowl of succulent strawberries freshly picked from the Stellenbosch strawberry farm.

So while my boys took some 'me' time away from Mom pressures, I enjoyed "ME" time in front of the flat screen in my plush suite at Spier wine estate. Even though both Roger and Novak were my winners, my money was on Novak. I just love the Slovenian tennis PRO.

The thing that got me to put money on him was his in between game ritualdid you notice the breathing technique Novak practiced between sets?

Recently my beautiful twenty-year-old son, Damian, rediscovered Transcendental Meditation, with it, he came across an amazing facilitator, Ericka Allison who does 'Breath Work' workshops in Cape Town.

So on our recent visit he encouraged us to join him on a two and a half hour session on the beach in Muizenberg with Ericka.

It's very hard to explain Ericka Allison's breath work session. All I can say is that within ten minutes of heavy breathing to trans music and guidance I was in emotional hysterics.

I am not sure where it came from. I was so one hundred per cent together when I walked through the door, laughed my head off when Ericka asked my son, "What did you tell your parents about the workshop?"

"Not much" replied my son.

"Don't worry about us." I assured Ericka, "We are very open minded."

The music started strong and Ericka lead us on a serious breathing trip, explaining the significance of breathing. The floor was filled with normal looking individuals. We were all lying on the floor wrapped in blankets, cocooned in warmth and comfort, it was freezing cold and raining outside.

As the music moved from fast and serious to ritualistic our breathing changed. I remember the big smile on my face when I settled in my womb like cocoon. There was no way I was going to break down to this, not a chance that breathing exercises were going to break my perfect mood.

Anyway it took ten minutes for my heavy breathing to turn to uncontrollable sobs it was one hundred per cent involuntarily. I swear I did not know where it came from. It's just that the breathing and the sound of the music got me balling and within seconds Ericka was by my side wiping my tears and supporting me emotionally, tissues and gentle touch, I felt so loved.

Two hours later and I went through all kinds of emotions. Most too personal to share but all so totally relevant to where I was at that moment in my life.

The thing that really caught my eye watching Wimbledon, I noticed Novak's impressive breath work in between sets. Seeing him doing heavy breathing convinced me early on that he was going to be the winner.

Ericka Allison has a serious CV of alterative healing credentials from all over the world. She has been mastering the art of breathing for over thirty years and her message is simple.

"Breath deep to a healthy life."

Its sound simple but trust me, conscience breathing is an important aspect of healthy living, so take a breather and take a deep breathit can extend your lifespan and will make you happy.
