Through My Eyes

Through My Eyes

Author: Kasia Yoko

Gosh are people angry over our president. Weekly the letters are piling up and I am saddened by the amount of anger that exists out there. What I don't get is how did so many people end up believing that a different president would change the status of our country.

Globally there occurs a trend of whacky politicians. Look at anyone of them. Whichever one you pick, go and research him or her and you will find that there are no martyr politicians, every President, every politician, and every human being tells lies and engages in acts of hypocrisy.

Take Obama for instance - did you know that he carried out military interventionism in Libya without Congressional approval - Obama violated the Constitution when he launched military operations in Libya without Congressional approval.

Obama also Auctioned off the ambassadorship to the Netherlands - In April 2012, Obama nominated Timothy Broas, who had "bundled" more than $500,000 (R5,415,500) for Obama's 2012 campaign, to be U.S. ambassador to the Netherlands.

Napoleon is said to have cautioned during an 1805 battle: "When the enemy is making a false movement we must take good care not to interrupt him." The citation is also sometimes rendered as "Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake."

On the other hand Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan is facing the most difficult challenge of his premiership. Corruption scandals, a weakening economy and a draining battle with the GŸlen movement have the leader reeling ahead of important local elections.

Erdogan is firing judges, sacking policemen and raising concerns about the fragility of the country's democracy according to diplomats and academics.

The "black-hearted" government of Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra of Thailand has made the peace loving Thai nation very angry they have been protesting for months. Yingluck has been accused of hiking the price of rice and sending Thailand's already impoverished nation into further poverty.

There is a common saying that "Politics is dirty".Anyone who believes otherwise should have his or her head examined. According to opinion polls, politicians are one of the least trusted professions.

With elections looming, South Africa is experiencing the phenomenon of voter apathy, the unwillingness of large sections of the electorate to bother supporting any of the competing factions at all during an election. However, failure to vote does not mean that one is removed from the consequences of political decision-making. The supporter, the opponent and the non-participant are bound equally by the laws that originated from the ruling party.

Voting is only one of many ways that we can actively participate in democracy. Speaking or writing to your local newspaper seems to be everyone's favourite but guess what, there are many others ways to speak out.

Democracy means 'the people rule' - taken seriously, this imposes a heavy burden on citizens requiring far more input than simply casting a ballot once every three or four years.

By refusing to be informed and engaged with important issues that affect us, we are abdicating the duties of citizenship. Unfortunately, with this attitude we will eventually end up with the government we deserve.

Be objective when you are making your political decision and know that there are no perfect politicians. Know that you owe it to yourself and to your community to cast your vote, so make it an informed choice.
