Through My Eyes

Through My Eyes

Author: Kasia Yoko

"We do not measure a culture by its output of undisguised trivialities but by what it claims as significant."Neil Postman

"Just get over yourself!" This is the advice I have been dishing out lately and, sorry for you but my mailbox is full and cannot take any more complaining at this time. Yes, life is tough for all of us, especially the moms with teenage sons, however its time to get over it and get on with it and realise that you cannot break the wall with your head. (My mother's favourite saying).

This wave of emotional outburst was sparked off by a good friend who recently moved overseas on a work contract. Shortly after her arrival I started receiving messages about how she was missing biltong and apricot jam and peanut butter sandwiches. Oh and she did not think she could live another day without rooibos tea.

I was laughing out loudI do not remember my friend ever indulging in such junk before. I have always known her to be a refined foodie and now this huge nostalgia for Cheddar Cheese.

What has happened to us as humanity? Why do we complain so much about trivia and what has happened to our adventurous spirit? Why have we ceased to enjoy the exploration of our senses? Is it because we feel we have explored all that there is to explore? Or are we just plain tired and 'gatvol'?

"What is wrong with new and foreign?" I wrote back to my friend. To which I received a whole new bouquet of complaints followed by, "Why are you so hard on me?"

Long time ago I asked a very good friend, "How do I make life as simple as possible?" To which he replied, "Make your mind as simple as possible, then your life will be simple."

He explained that it is greed shared with ignorance, which makes life so complicated. Not easy when almost everybody around us is living such a speedy, greedy, and complicated life.

"One needs great wisdom and a strong mind not to follow them. Before you know it, you are thinking of what to do to prove that you are not a failure. You'll try to do all the things you can to prove that you are a success. It's hard to live your life without thinking of what others think of you." He concluded.

Life is a series of changes. No finality or certainty, always experimenting with new ways of living and relating.

Thinking that there must be a perfect place to live and a perfect partner to live with; fooling ourselves all the time. How scared we would be without such make-believe!

But as we grow older and become more and more disillusioned we find out slowly that there is no perfect place in the world, no perfect friend, no perfect teacher, no perfect priestLife is strange, at least for me - I take it one day at the time...how about you?
