Through My Eyes

Through My Eyes

Author: Kasia Yoko
Date: 2013-08-23
With just 120 days left to Christmas I cannot believe how time has flown, 2013 has zoomed by and good riddance is what I want to say. This year reminded me that I should be grateful, every day that I get to spend with family and friends I must rejoice and count my blessing. So although collectively 2013 has not been so fantastic, there have been some glimmers of sunshine to light my way.

I know that I am not alone; my best friend Tony has also had a horrid time. Every time we speak he talks about running away. Coping has become a way of life for so many of us and without proper support systems it is so easy to crash.

I was speaking to my father this past weekend. He is such a wise man, he was telling me about these horrific universal phenomena of mental illness due to the intense economic drive.

It's generally accepted that crazy is a universal phenomenon. No matter where you live in the world, you're still just a human with a human brain, and it makes sense that all brains malfunction in the same way. Sure, one guy hallucinates aliens while another sees demons, but it comes down to the same illness. But what's awesome (and terrifying) about the brain is all of the ways it defies explanation.

My father told me that after World War I, Germany experienced a period of ridiculous inflation, so rapid that, reportedly, the value of a cup of coffee could double during the time it took to drink it. This also meant that everyday goods could suddenly be priced at millions or billions of marks, with salaries changing just as fast.

As a result of the sudden confusion and anxiety that accompanied every purchase, Germany saw the rise of a brand new and unique mental disorder, specific to that place and time: zero stroke. Because so many zeros were added to their prices, they spend so much time adding up the zeros that it drove some people crazy.

With all the new technologies, new discoveries into the mental system and its intricacies. The new psychotic drugs and the greed of the pharmaceutical companies, it is all heading for a nasty climax and the sad truth is that so many of us are becoming more and more vulnerable to fall pray to psychosis.

And while I believe in the treatment and medical power of the cure, I cannot help to think how many people try to escape the realities of tough times with a dose of 'magic cure'.

As we head towards Christmas and the summer holidays, there is just so much to be looking forward to. The warm summer days soaking up the sun, the warm sand under our feet, the smell of the fire on a Sunday afternoon and the family feasts. Let not forget that tough times are a fleeting phenomena and that the only constant in life is change.

So lets look forward to the holidays and the brand new year, pray God, let it come, I am waiting for it.
