As the mountain biking season builds up to the South African Cross Country Championships next weekend and beyond to the UCI XCO World Championships, national selection hopeful Stuart Marais has singled out the Illovo Eston MTB Challenge as an important part of his next month's racing.
The iconic event, now into its 17th year, will take place on Sunday, 4 August and often attracts the cream of the mountain biking crop. Defending champion Marais is expecting there to be another strong field this year for the 60km Illovo Eston Marathon.
"The usual suspects should be there like Andrew (Hill), Tyronne (White) and Julian (Jessop)," the Expedient Africa rider said. "The race has become one of those iconic races that you have to do and along with the Sappi Karkloof Classic is one of the top one day races that you can race. "There is a prestige that comes with winning Eston and that is what draws riders to the event."
The Illovo Eston MTB Challenge will be the eighth leg of the popular and ever competitive Quattro ROAG Series. More information can be found at http://www.illovoestonmtb.co.za
